Muddasick!
Just put it in the bin
Thursday, 03 January 2008 00:00
I know that I am most likely writing this to people who don't litter and do care about how our island looks. But I've just got to rant! Can these idiots please stop throwing garbage on the ground. Kentucky, Burger King, Wendy's you name it! I drive home and the roads look so great and then I turn the corner and there it is - Kentucky snack pack just trailed across the lovely grass! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Here's an idea you dumping dogs, keep the garbage in your car until you get home or hey near a garbage can.... then take it out of your car and put it in the trash. That's probably too difficult for these thick heads to get.

I can't believe that our lovely sanitation men clean our streets and then non caring, not thinking, idiots just chuck their garbage out because they know someone will pick it up.

Oh yeah, if there are any police out there reading this - there is a law that you can fine these litter bugs. There are signs on the road and the fine is not cheap. Think of the money you could collect. Do you need us to call and tell you license plate numbers? Let us know - I am sure I can catch someone!

So, hey - its 2008, save your planet and just put it in the bin! oh yeah, please!

Was it not Hubert Ingraham himself who a couple of years ago told us how great Winding Bay at Cherokee was going to be for us? Remember all the great things that Mr. Peter De Savary was going to do? Water for all of Cherokee, jobs for Bahamians, money by the millions and all we had to do was to give up a little bit of our crown land and Mr. De Savary would do the rest.

The rest is history. De Savary is GONE, money is GONE, land is GONE, hundreds of acres of land GONE, and millions of gallons of water GONE, millions of dollars for our treasury GONE. He was even given two taxi plates. No jobs for Bahamians, what a deal!

What is Fred Mitchell talking about?
Thursday, 22 November 2007 13:39
Muddasick! Can anyone answer my question: "Why did Fred Mitchell decide to come to Grand Bahama and pontificate on the current topic of out-of-control crime this week?

Is the answer to this question that he is only trying to start contention when the Prime Minister and Mr Turnquest are out of the country and not here to defend the Government's stance on this issue?

Yours,
Puzzled

Enough with the bad service!
Thursday, 15 November 2007 13:41
Good morning,

After reading the former articles about service I have to say "Muddasick" ya'll soooooo right.

I go to Wendy's often and, on top of getting the wrong order or a bad job at preparing the order, there's the fact that you get to the cashier window and there's no welcome, much less a 'thank you'. However, when you go to the window where you pick up the food, they may not smile but they say 'thank you' and 'have a nice day'.

At the cashier window it's like you stole their bonus or something. They don't say 'good afternoon' (which is normally the time I go) and I even had the experience of not even being retold the amount. This girl just put her hand out of the window and passed back the change without a word, a smile or even a glance. I tried to call to tell a supervisor about it but the phone was not answered.

Look, I know what it is, ladies, to work on a job like this where you probably don't want to be, but that attitude could cost you that bread and butter as well. I know your supervisors or bosses or co-worker probably got on your nerve but don't take it out on me and end up losing your job in the process.

Signed:
Enough of the bad service please!

Customer service...continued
Thursday, 08 November 2007 13:43
Just a few comments to the letter concerning service at the Corner Bar (click here to read). I agree with everything the writer is saying. Customer service is virtually non-existent in Freeport. The incident at the Corner Bar is just one example, has anyone been to McDonald's lately? They don't even like to give you the proper change.

Everyday we read or hear about all the great developments (hotels, businesses, etc.) that are anticipated for Freeport, but until something is done or someone addresses the problem of customer service, these projects will ultimately fail or leave like many others have done in the past. Look at what has happened with the cruise lines, everyone's celebrating the return of RCL, but we've lost several (Disney, Carnival, etc.) in the process. Why? Mainly because of poor customer service. This begins with the first people most of the tourist meet when they step off the plane or boat, Customs, Immigration and the transportation people (taxi drivers, tour operators, etc).... you know what they say about first impressions. If this poor attitude and lack of training continues with people working in the service industry, then Freeport will continue in its economic spiral..... it'll only be a matter of time before RCL pulls out too.

By the way, the "automatic" 15% gratuity that the writer talks about is actually not an obligation to pay; there is nothing in the law that states that a 15% gratuity should be added to the bill. This is something that was established by the hotel unions as a service tax for its members working in the service areas of the hotels (restaurants, housekeeping, etc.). As customer's we have the right to refuse to pay the 15% gratuity.

Remember, there are a lot more places in the Caribbean that are more welcoming than Freeport is in its present state (Turks & Caicos, Dominican Republic, etc.)

There has to be a change in attitude before anything else will change.

What happened to the 'good' movies?
Thursday, 01 November 2007 12:48
What is going on at the movie theatre? It has been at least six weeks since there was a decent movie to see. (The Brave One, with Jodie Foster). I know the theatre has to bring in movies that will bring in the people, but couldn't they have one screen for a thought-provoking movie. There are so many good films out there, "The Kingdom" with Jamie Foxx, "Gone Baby Gone" with Morgan Freeman, "Michael Clayton" with George Clooney, just to name a few. I love the movies and each Thursday when the new films are listed I hope there will be one I will want to see, but lately there has just not been any.

AIDS Ball money matters
Thursday, 01 November 2007 12:44
It is time for the AIDS Ball on Grand Bahama . When I asked “what are they doing with the proceeds?” I was told that the monies from the past several balls plus this one are going toward the building of a facility on Grand Bahama for the AIDS Awareness Committee. MUDDASICK! Just what we need, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a building for another organisation, when what they need to do with that money is to put it to work on the radio, in the news, on the streets educating our young people about AIDS.

What we really need are some radio ads telling the young men that “its time to cover up or DIE” and the young women that “ without protection… along with a cute baby can come a slow death…for both of them from AIDS!

A few years ago there was a local TV ad campaign ongoing and lots of talk and posters about AIDS. Now all I hear about is the Ball. There was a very interesting art exhibit at the Nature Center last week with the Bahamas AIDS quilt and AIDS paintings by a wonderful Bahamian artist, Antonius Roberts…. very poorly attended. I sincerely hope that the high school kids were bused over to see it, but I doubt it. On top of that, there was no jar for donations set up at the exhibit! A small thing but come on! I would have written a cheque.

We worry about crime in this country and it seems that most of it these days directly involves the youth. Well, we wont have to worry about that for long when the majority of them develop AIDS and die before they become adults. It is time for hard facts and hard language out there on the streets about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. They watch it on TV and like it in the music videos…well, give it back to them.

Why doesn’t the Committee take some of this “building money” and ask Beyonce Knowles (of Bahamian heritage) if she would donate her time to make a video information ad for AIDS AWARENESS in the Bahamas , I am sure our children would listen to her!!!

MUDDASICK!!!!!

Service woes
Thursday, 01 November 2007 10:49
I find myself sitting and writing to you with regards to this issue because I think I have had enough. On Saturday night a group of us went to a very wonderful party that was being held at Sabor’s Restaurant for the Santa’s Helpers Fund. What a great night and I hope that the group made some good money to provide toys for the kids at Christmas. After this event a group of us walked over to Port Lucaya to have a few more drinks before we went home for the evening. We decided to stop at the Corner Bar as they had a nice crowd of locals that were also at the event and tourists and we figured that would be the place to spend our money.

Much to our dismay, the server was EXTREMELY rude when we sat down and placed our order. My mother always taught me to use the old rule of "“kill 'em with kindness”" and so I just kept on smiling. She obviously had a bad night or perhaps a bad customer earlier, but this had nothing to do with me or our group. I continued to smile even though she was being rude and ordered my drink. Again her reply to me was impolite when advising me that they no longer had the type of drink I wanted. I just continued to smile and ordered something else. The group I was with was stunned by the performance of this server and a few even said something. The worst thing about this was that the owner was standing about 4 feet away and saw this conduct and let it go on. Finally another server (much more polite) came and took care of us.
