'Info' is a big hit at Nassau business trade show

'Info' is a big hit at Nassau business trade showDid you see us at the BAHAMAS BUSINESS TRADE SHOW? We had a great time at this very well attended event in Nassau last weekend. Leigh Termath, Editor and Owner of Bahama Buy & Sell and I attended the two-day event held at the revamped Sheraton on Cable Beach. We met lots of fellow businesspersons and talked to many Nassauvians who did not know about Leigh's paper and hadn't experienced our weekly e-mail newsletter, Nassau Info. We also talked a lot about Grand Bahama, where we both live and work. Both Leigh and I made many of contacts and one of those, Mrs Keshella Kerr, will now  be a featured writer for us with her wonderful articles about money and kids. I think both of us would say that the organisers, especially Mrs Wendy Wong, were wonderful to work with and that the event was well run and organised. Congratulations Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and the Bahamas Hotel Association.

If you use the popular and free e-mail service Gmail by Google, you may be missing a LOT. Gmail is a great service, no doubt. We use it often and find it to have great features, massive storage ability, broad and well-developed searching features (of course!), and the ability to send large (up to 20MB) attachments. There is much to love about Gmail but there is one thing that we are not a big fan of, and that is that Gmail automatically truncates, clips or shortens some e-mails -- that means you will not necessarily see all of the content of an e-mail!

According to Gmail, this is "to ensure that messages load quickly". This "feature" is not loved by many Gmail users, however. We checked the Gmail message boards and found several complaints about this. If you are a subscriber to Grand Bahama Info or Nassau Info newsletters, and you use Gmail as your e-mail service, you are likely missing vital parts of those newsletters -- entire sections and photos may not be showing up!

Bad news/good news

BahamaIslandsInfo.com - bandwidth exceeded!Sometimes you have to see the good news in the bad news. Last week Thursday we received an urgent message that BahamaIslandsInfo.com was "down" and that an ominous message was showing. Of course, hearing that your web site is non-operational will cause any webmaster's heart to skip a beat or two. We scrambled to find out what was going on and how it could be remedied.

It turned out that an "exceeded bandwidth" message was being displayed. You see, a certain volume of traffic is allocated for a web site's server for each calendar month. This amount is determined by how many visitors a web site expects and what kind of (or, how much) content is expected to be delivered for that web site.

When BahamaIslandsInfo.com was first launched just six weeks ago we allocated 5GB (that's five billion characters) of traffic for the web server computer. That amount was exceeded in the first three weeks and had to be increased to 15GB -- 300% more. Less than three weeks later that amount was exceeded! So last weekend we increased our monthly bandwidth allocation to 30GB -- a 600% increase since its start.

Of course, this is all because of the tremendous success that BahamaIslandsInfo.com has become in just a few weeks. With hundreds of unique visitors every day, prominent search engine placement, an ever-growing networking of cross links from other web sites, and a surging number of loyal visitors from around the world, BahamaIslandsInfo.com is becoming one of the premiere online destinations for news, information and more about the Bahamas.

We hope that you are enjoying BahamaIslandsInfo.com as much as we enjoy bringing it to you! We are always open to your comments and suggestions, and would love to have your feedback on how we can improve BahamaIslandsInfo.com to meet your needs. We invite you to head over to Da Dilly Tree and leave your comments in the BahamaIslandsInfo.com section, or write to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
