A new gallery at Garden of the Groves on Grand Bahama
Robbin Whachell
Monday, 01 December 2008 09:15
THE ARTISTS: Antonius Roberts, Chantal Bethel, and Claudette Dean stand at the entrance to THE Gallery which features their art work for viewing and sale at the Garden of the Groves. There is a room at the back of the chapel on the hill at the Garden of the Groves. A room that perhaps most did not know existed, that is until… it became THE Gallery. With a mission statement to offer an authentic, and affordable Bahamian experience through art, three well-known Bahamian artists have joined together with the support of Bahamas Parks, Gardens, and Recreation, to bring this a gallery into existence in the perfect setting of the Gardens. The works of Chantal Bethel, Claudette Dean and Antonius Roberts can now all be seen and purchased from one location in Grand Bahama.

To have a gallery in a noted landmark on the island is truly a gift. The chapel, a replica of the first chapel in Pineridge, has much history behind it and has been a place of many happy times hosting weddings, ceremonies, and blessings. Previously a meditation room, the space has been converted into a light and quaint gallery that has an entrance nestled in the yew trees of the garden.

Loads of wine, food, art, music and goodies at Festival Noel
Barefoot Marketing

Getting ready for Festival Noel this week, the Bristol Wines and Spirits team meet with the Grand Bahama National Trust team to go over wine table placements and set up procedures. Bristol will feature 22 wines as well as have two bars at the event. Pictured during the on site visit are (left to right) Karin Sanchez, GB Bahamas National Trust Chairman, Cecilia Bodie, BNT Administrator and Educational liaison at the Rand Nature Centre, Rusty Scates, Bristol’s Wine Manager and Jevon Butler, Bristol Wines and Sprits Grand Bahama Manager. As the Christmas season approaches one of Grand Bahama’s most exciting events is almost here. Festival Noel, which is held the first Friday in December, truly kicks off Christmas celebrations on the island and also welcomes back many of the island’s snowbird residents.

Festival’s main sponsor is Bristol Wines and Sprits and each year they pull out all the stops and many a cork for the largest wine tasting on the island. “Again this year we are featuring an interesting range of wines and sparkling wines” noted Rusty Scates, Bristol’s Wine Manager. “Festival Noel is a perfect time for new wine enthusiasts to come out and taste wines from well-known wine producing regions such as South Africa, Argentina, Spain, California and Italy.”

Besides wonderful wines the Bristol team will also team up with two of the six local restaurants that are participating in the Chef Noel competition. “We added a mojito bar to Festival Noel in 2006” said Bristol Wines and Sprits Grand Bahama Manager, Jevon Butler, “this was a great success with our guests. So this year we will have two bars on the night, one located at the Agave table and the other at the Dive In-Bar & Grill.”

While tasting wine and enjoying scrumptious fare, guests will also have the opportunity to view beautiful artwork by over thirteen local artists and guest artist Eric Ellis, coming in from Andros. And as if that was not enough they will also be entertained by local musicians as well. This year Festival Noel will have three different performers singing classic Christmas songs and playing beautiful music through out the gardens. These include Erik Russell, a soloist, Steve Persuad, a classical guitarist and the Starlighters who are well known for their melodic tunes.

The Regency Singers, Grand Bahama’s premier singing group, are presenting a special concert for this holiday season – on Thursday, December 4 a reprise of last year’s highly acclaimed Messiah! The Regency Singers, Grand Bahama’s premier singing group, are presenting a special concert for this holiday season – on Thursday, December 4 a reprise of last year’s highly acclaimed Messiah!

The concert starts at 8 p.m. at Ascension Church, off West Beach Road.

Last year’s Messiah! played to a full house, and many fans unable to attend asked for a second performance, which the group was unfortunately unable to accommodate.

This year’s performance also provides an opportunity for extra singers and a small chamber orchestra to participate. It is certain to be sold out, so be sure to get there early. All proceeds from this concert will go to the Salvation Army in order to aid them in their efforts to help the needy of our community during the holiday season.

There will be only one performance which is not to be missed!

Members of The Heart Ball Committee at their last meeting as they prepare The Heart Ball and The Annual Tea Party & Fashion Show. The Heart Ball Committee is the fund raising arm of The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation.  Each year, The Heart Ball Committee hosts two major fundraising events: The Heart Ball and The Annual Tea Party / Fashion Show. Other fundraising activities include yard sales and the giving of heart bracelets in exchange for a donation.

These events generate funds that aid in the repair of hearts of children. In addition, The Foundation accepts donations, memorial donations and tax-deductible donations. No amount is too small. Being a non-profit organization, The Foundation relies heavily on the generosity of others to meet their goals.

The Foundation’s main goals are to assist children with the treatment of heart disease and to educate and inform Bahamians about heart care. The Foundation runs primarily on a voluntary and contributory basis. 98% of the funds received go directly to the treatment of heart disease in children and the remaining 2% covering the cost of administration.
