I am a 55 yr old Bahamian woman who has not worked in almost two years. I have applied for jobs here in Grand Bahama, Nassau, Bimini, to no avail. In one instance I was told that I am “too old” and in another, I am too qualified. RUBBISH! I do not have a criminal record or an attitude problem, nor am I a lazy person. I always give my 110% in whatever I do. Being unable to maintain myself financially I have ventured to ask the assistance of Social Services. I received food stamps in mid-June for forty dollars ($40.00) which could not even scratch the surface in the local food store, but I was able to buy a few needed items. My phone, cable, light and water are consistently being disconnected. Thank God for small blessings. |

I think it’s time for Freeport to ban plastic bags.
Will you view the slide show and pass it on? http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080506/MULTIMEDIA02/80505016 Cheers, Kathy |

Dear Sir,
I must write in response to the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Greg Moss' remarks regarding the Fleming Groups interest in Grand Bahama. It is not just specifically his comments, but this is to all of those who are bashing a group that want to come in here and invest money. Is everyone here on this island making so much money that we can afford to be so picky? I realize that due diligence is needed and we cannot just sell our soul to the highest bidder, but then again can we not? Mr. Fleming has proclaimed his intense interest in putting money in Grand Bahama. He says he has a billion dollars of his own and can bring even more money here through his world wide contacts and business relationships. Has anyone else said anything like this? Mr. Fleming has spent considerable money with several Grand Bahamian businesses to put together a plan that has been shown to hundreds of people. He has hired consultants to survey Grand Bahamian businesses on their manpower needs. He has spent money on advertising, with Grand Bahamian media outlets. Has anyone else done this? Has anyone else put themselves out there like this? I am not "pro-Fleming". I am pro anyone who wants to come and rescue us and right now Fleming appears to be our super hero. |

On a recent visit to Nassau, we tried to find Jacaranda House. The details on the tourist map we were given were a bit obscure. We found the Post Office with a parking lot opposite. There was also a pink painted historic house next to the parking lot. Was this Jacaranda House, or has it been pulled down? As British tourists keen on history, we were dismayed to see the condition of many of the formerly beautiful historic buildings, and hope something can be done for them. They would be a wonderful asset to the tourist trade if they could be saved. The man at the Art Gallery was very knowledgeable and helpful. -Smheron |
