Cowboys & Aliens

The tagline for this move: First Contact. Last Stand. A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town. What he discovers is that the people of the town don't welcome strangers. It's a town that lives in fear, but they are about to experience fear they can scarcely comprehend as the desolate place is attacked by marauders from the sky. Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he's been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force.

Jake Longerman is a wanted outlaw with amnesia and a mysterious shackle around one wrist who wants nothing more than to figure out why he is in the predicament he is in and how to get himself out of it quickly and alive. Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde is a a powerful and rich cattleman who controls the town of Absolution with an iron fist which is enforced by his right-hand man Nat Colorado. Ella Swenson is a traveler passing through town with a secret of her own that is somehow linked to the people who have been going missing in the area. Sheriff John Taggart is the lawman for Absolution, but he is only allowed to do his job when it does not interfere with the wishes of the Colonel.

If you like your westerns movies, science fiction movies and comic book adaption movies then this is not the movie for you because it mashes the three together unsuccessfully like a bad Syfy channel movie of the week. Now don't get me wrong, the effects are great in this movie and the acting is top notch because it is played straight the whole way through but this mix is week. It actually feels like a patchwork quilt of western cliches that would work perfectly if not the sci fi elements. Maybe the fact that this is one of the first movies that Jon Favreau directed that he didn't give him self a small role in was a sign that he bit off more then he could chew with this production. All I can say is that you can wait for dvd for this one. I rate this movie a Rated D.

Bad Teacher

The tagline for this movie: She doesn't give an "F." When a foul-mouthed, junior high teacher is dumped by her fiancé, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute. Competing for his affections is an overly energetic colleague with an actual love of teaching. When she also finds herself fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher, the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her coworkers, and even herself an education like no other.

Elizabeth Halsey is an inappropriate junior high teacher with a plan to raise money for a boob job so she can woo the rich substitute teacher and finally quit her teaching job for a life of leisure and shopping. Amy Squirrell is a junior high teacher who lives for the school and the chance to mold young minds so she sees Elizabeth's lax teaching style and general demeanor as the opposite of everything a teacher should be. Russell Gettis is a gym teacher who is attracted to Elizabeth and aware of her gold digging attitude but sees a better person inside of her that she doesn't see in her self. Scott Delacorte is a substitute teacher from a rich family of watch makers who has just come out of a relationship and finds himself attracted to Amy but being chased by Elizabeth.

If you like your raunchy comedies with a crazy lead character with a goal that may only be attainable through the manipulation of others then this is the movie for you. I actually found the movie entertaining for what it was and the child actors were on par with their adult counterparts for the most part. The only thing I didn't like about this movie was Justin Timberlake's performance which felt like one of his skits from Saturday Night Live. It seem to me that everyone else in this movie understood the type of comedy they were in except for him through off every scene he was in except for the dry humping one. The movie did remind me of Bad Santa, but I think that is on account of them both having the word Bad in a two word title. I rate this movie a Rated B.

Priest

The tagline for this movie:  The War Is Eternal. His Mission Is Just The Beginning. The story of a legendary warrior from the last vampire war who lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities. When his niece is abducted by a pack of vampires, he must break his vow of non-interference to venture out of the city on a quest to find her before she is turned. He is joined on his crusade by his niece's boyfriend and a fellow warrior from the war.

Priest is one of the best of a disbanded order of elite spiritual warriors called Priests, who finds himself forced to slay vampires again when his brother is mortally wounded, his sister-in-law is killed and his niece is kidnapped during a raid. Priestess is another member of the disbanded order who has been sent to bring Priest back to the city but decides to help him on his mission because she knows how much Lucy means to him and because she has been in love with him since the war. Hicks is Lucy's boyfriend and a sheriff at the town that she lived on the outskirts of with her parents and he is ready to take up arms with Priest to track down the vampires who stole Lucy and get her back no matter the cost. Black Hat is a ex Priest who was left for dead after a botched mission during the war and is now leading an army of vampires and familiars in an attempt to bust through one of the walled-in cities and begin a new vampire versus human war.

I enjoy my vampire movies and I enjoy my westerns and I enjoy my post apocalyptic action movies set in alternate worlds, but this movie just sucked. The fact that it was so short would have been enough for me to wonder why it didn't go straight to dvd or buy on demand internet, but the material in the actual movie could have probably fit into a thirty minute short film. I never read the Korean comic book that the movie was based on, but I am quite sure that it had more going for it than this film adaptation. Every actor in the movie was wasted because they are all capable of so much more. Don't get me started on the not so special effects which prove that if you can't bring the scary in your big bad villains then maybe you should show them a little as possible. I rate this movie a rated C. You can wait for it to come on cable television with commercials.

Hanna

The tagline for this movie: Adapt Or Die. A teenage girl goes out into the world for the first time and has to battle for her life. She was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin and is dispatched by him on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives. As she nears her objective, she faces revelations about her existence that were never explored in her training.

Hanna Heller is an adolescent girl who is sent on a solo mission to prove that her upbringing and training as a human killing machine has been a success, but the information she learns about her origin may unravel the world she thought she knew.

Erik Heller is a widowed ex-CIA operative who has been raising Hanna in the wilds of North Finland to be a perfect weapon and must now let her go on her first mission in the real world without him there to watch over her as he takes care of some unfinished business. Marissa Wiegler is a corrupt CIA agent who sees Erik and Hanna has a couple of loose ends to a government project that the higher-ups had deemed a failure, but she soon realizes that tying up loose ends are easier said than done. Issacs is a mercenary hired by Marissa to capture Hanna as she goes after Erik, but he soon finds out that even with the help of his team that Hanna will very quickly turn them from hunters to prey.

For me the fun thing about watching this film was the visual grammar which allowed things to be said through movement rather than words. There is a definite European feel to the pace of the film and the long wordless scenes which allows the soundtrack by The Chemical Brothers to truly shine. The brisk action sequences propel each scene of this unique revenge thriller which shows that Joe Wright can direct more than just period dramas. The script by David Farr and Seth Lochhead takes some interesting turns and gives the experienced actors fun characters to portray. The acting in this movie is superb and each person brings to the table what they do best with a style that is all their own. I rate this movie a Rated T.

Battle Los Angeles

This movie has no tagline. The Unidentified Flying Object sightings of fantasy have  become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any ever encountered by the human race.

Marine Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz has just had his retirement approved but must go back into the line of duty in order to assist a 2nd Lieutenant and his platoon as they fight to reclaim the city of Los Angeles from hostile alien invaders. Second Lieutenant William Martinez is the newly installed platoon  commander given the mission to rescue civilians from an LAPD police station with a three-hour time limit before the Air Force bombs the area. Corporal Jason Lockett doubts the ability of SSgt Nantz due to the fact that he lead the platoon in the Middle East that his brother was killed in. Air Force Intelligence Technical Sergeant Elena Santos is among the soldiers using the LAPD police station for shelter after encountering the first wave of the alien attack.

If you are looking for a movie with mulit-cultural cast and a lot of war movie cliches then look no further than this film. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then this film has chosen to 'flatter' some popular films that have come before it. If you can look past the Independence Day cinematography then you will deal with the War of the Worlds plot. Then you have the Friday Night Lights story pacing with the Black Hawk Down story structure. Then you have the District 9 special effects style with the Saving Private Ryan character archetypes. It is a war movie with science fiction undertones and when the action happens it is loud, so you notice it. I don't see this being a movie to run out and watch in the theater , but the type you stay home and try on dvd. I rate this movie a Rated D.
