Hot on the heels of Manchester United legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, international soccer celebrity and soccer legend David Beckham retired. This was a shock to everyone as he had only signed with Paris Saint-Germain, PSG, in January.

His last game was on Saturday, 18th May where PSG won the league title. This made David Beckham the first English player to ever win a championship title in four different countries. Manchester United (England), Real Madrid (Spain), LA Galaxy (US) and PSG (France).

David Beckham has had a tremendous soccer career playing for clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy, PSG and also having the honor of playing for his country England.

David Beckham took home a lot of trophies. He won with Manchester United six league championships, two FA cups, and one European cup in 1999.

David Beckham started his career at fourteen years old playing for Manchester United youth team. He made his first Premier League appearance in 1992.

Beckham left England for Real Madrid and played in La Liga (Spanish league) for four years winning the championship in his final season.

NASSAU, Bahamas -- This year's annual Frank "Pancho" Rahming Primary School Track and Field Championship scheduled for May 22 at the old Thomas Robinson Track and Field Stadium will be in recognition of the Bahamas' 40th Independence Anniversary. Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr. the Hon. Danny Johnson made the announcement at a press conference May 15.

HARBOUR ISLAND, Bahamas -- Team Makin' Reel Memories wasted no time establishing a firm lead in last week's Harbour Island Championship. Angler Kathy Jossim grabbed 1,200 points for the team by catching and releasing two blue marlin on day one of the tournament. Harbour Island is the second leg of the four tournament Bahamas Billfish Championship.

Jossim released her first blue at 10:05 and her second at 3:45. In the meantime, Luis Bacardi on the Rum Bum was busy getting a Grand Slam. Bacardi started the day with a blue marlin release at 9:46. Shortly after ten o'clock, he released a sailfish. He completed the 'slam' at 3:05 releasing a white marlin.

Although teams Makin' Reel Memories and Rum Bum remained quiet, Joe Posillico's Team Torta made their presence known on days two and three by catching two white marlin and a blue.

The final day of the tournament started with the Farmingdale, New York Viking in second place with 1,000 points. The 57 Bertram Rum Bum was in third place with 900 points and Makin' Reel Memories, a 60 Hatteras, was holding on to first place with 1,200 points.

In all BBC tournaments, 700 ‘grand slam bonus’ points are awarded to a team catching a sailfish, white marlin (or spearfish) and blue marlin in one day during the tournament. At the conclusion of the tournament, the Grand Slam Bonus points are added to the team’s overall score for that tournament. This meant that, regardless of what happened on day four, Rum Bum was assured of finishing with at least 1,600 points.

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- Organizers of the Special Olympics 5K Run/Walk are encouraging corporate Grand Bahama as well as individuals in the community to come out and support its annual fundraising event this coming Saturday, 18th May.

Hosted by the Grand Bahama Chapter of Special Olympics, the event is slated to begin at 8:00am, commencing at the Ranfurly Circus (Princess Gate). The route will take runners/walkers north along The Mall Drive heading to the Garnett Levarity Justice Centre (Police Station) round-about and back to the starting point.

Chairperson for the event, Miss Kendra Clarke explains that the 5K Run/Walk event is a major annual fundraiser for the Special Olympics Grand Bahama Chapter. “Each year the Chapter focuses on providing sports training and athletic competition year-round for adults and children with intellectual disabilities.” states Clarke.

“Proceeds from this event will provide assistance to more than 54 special athletes, who participate in a number of sports including Bocce, Basketball, Tennis, Swimming, Track & Field and Soccer.” Clarke continued.

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- On Saturday, May 11, 2013 supporters turned out in large numbers to raise awareness for those living with Down Syndrome (DS) on Grand Bahama. The Buddy Walk is an international walk event that promotes the inclusion and acceptance of adults and children living with DS around the world. This event, organized locally by the Grand Bahama Down Syndrome Society, attracted hundreds of walkers who took to the Mall early Saturday morning in support of this worthy cause.

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition which occurs when an extra copy of the 21st chromosome alters the course of physical and cognitive development.  People with Down Syndrome, despite their challenges, continue to lead fulfilling lives, going to school and work and having meaningful interpersonal relationships. This is only enhanced by events such as the Buddy Walk and the ongoing support of the community, family and friends.

Proceeds from this year’s Buddy Walk will go to assist the Grand Bahama Special Olympics Team and to produce an Early Intervention Resource Guide for Special Needs Children on Grand Bahama. According to event organizer, Wende Hanna, “Early intervention is a critical component for any type of neurological impairment, not just DS. Between the ages of 0-3 is a critical time in the development of the brain, and early intervention therapies such as physical, occupational and speech, during this stage of life, have a profound positive impact on future development.

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- Last weekend, the Freeport Rugby Club held their 3rd Annual Junior Rugby International Tournament. It was a great success.

Arriving in The Bahamas were teams from The Cayman Islands and America to play the great game of rugby. The teams all showed great sportsmanship and it was obvious they all enjoyed themselves a lot. There were teams from under nine to sixteen years old.  

On Friday night there was a welcome pizza party. 80 pizzas were delivered to the club, which was good as while eating the kids all got to get to know one and another. When the coaches and teams arrived they ran onto the pitch and all of a sudden the field was filled with young rugby players. It was really cool to see so many people there playing on the field and just having fun.

On Saturday there were games all day. They all started on time and the organizers did a great job of sticking to the planned schedule getting all the games finished by 5pm so we could then all watch an exhibition game played by The Golden Oldies, teams made up of men over 35 years of age.

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- Action continues 10:00 AM on Saturdays with baseball double headers on all fields and girls softball action in the afternoon.

Practice sessions for the 9-10 team traveling to Abaco next weekend are in full swing as well as preparation in all divisions for BBF Nationals in June.
