Meet one of our many rescues from our West End clinic - Nina Simone. (Yes, named after the blues singer for those of you old enough to remember!) Meet one of our many rescues from our West End clinic - Nina Simone. (Yes, named after the blues singer for those of you old enough to remember!) She was caught in one of our humane traps right across the street from the clinic site. Several local residents had asked us to catch her. While some were worried their children could get sick due to her appearance others were distressed as she had evidently been the brunt of much rock and bottle throwing.

Nina was frightened, but seemed sadly resigned to whatever her new fate might be. She gratefully accepted food and water through the mesh of the trap but still looked at us warily. One good look in those sad yet yearning eyes and we just had to give her a chance. We took her back to our shelter and let her out of the trap in the front yard where she lived for about a week. Hiding in the bushes for the first few days, only coming out to eat and drink water. We put dewormer and meds in her food. We kept talking to her but not crowding her, and we began to be rewarded with wags from her stumpy tail. After about six days, we had a big breakthrough, she approached US! And allowed us to pet her and talk softly to her.

Her skin condition appears to be just an advanced dermatitis, not mange, and just in the week since these photos were taken, new hair is growing already. She is now a different dog, it is heartwarming how quickly she's gotten over her initial fear and distrust. She's had her first bath, and while she didn't much like it, she tolerated it very well. In fact she is now sleeping in the office and greets us all with her unique "talking" and hearty tail wags!

Her skin condition appears to be just an advanced dermatitis, not mange, and just in the week since these photos were taken, new hair is growing already. We are very hopeful we can turn this sweet little ugly duckling into a beautiful swan again. Her spirit is amazing. She is a petite little thing, only about 25 lbs. We can only wonder at what horrors she's endured but hope to continue making that part of her life an ever more distant memory.

As we are moving into a new era for animal welfare on our island, with our new shelter and our spay/neuter and other projects, we ask Grand Bahama to remember Nina Simone and the many others like her we hope to save. They need your help more than ever!
