“You will be our public face in the next six months,” said Mr Major. “Make sure that each encounter you have is positive no matter how much you may be provoked to do otherwise. I know it is not always easy but exert your best effort.” Mr Major made these remarks as he welcomed some 150 people employed in the Ministry’s program to an orientation program on February 3. Also in attendance were Minister of Public Works and Transport the Hon Neko C Grant, Nicole Campbell, Undersecretary; Bruce Walker, Deputy Permanent Secretary and Ursula Chisholm, Human Resources Manager. The Government’s six-months program is designed to create 2,500 temporary jobs throughout The Bahamas. Employees will be assigned to one of four projects under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. The projects include street naming, house numbering, repairs to cemeteries and maintenance of Government buildings. Mr Major told the employees that they would be aware of the negative image that has been portrayed of civil servants not only in a popular song, but also in the experience of some of the customers they serve.“It is unfortunate that the negative is most often highlighted and the positive that happens every day is ignored,” Mr Major said. He urged the employees to give their “best effort” to the projects that they have been assigned to.
