A generous way to celebrate

Gemma and Toby Cafferata recently celebrated their 8th birthdays in an extraordinary way: by donating almost $700.00 to the Grand Bahama Children’s Home. FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- Gemma and Toby Cafferata recently celebrated their 8th birthdays in an extraordinary way: by donating almost $700.00 to the Grand Bahama Children’s Home.

“We all know how excited children get about their birthdays … and a large part of that is often thinking about the presents. When we think of Gemma and Toby asking for donations for the children at the Home instead of gifts for themselves, it just amazes us,” says GBCH Administrator Mrs. Brennamae Rolle-Cooper.

“It is such a generous, loving way for them to celebrate their birthdays. This wonderful donation is very much needed and will go a long way in helping us at the Home. We want to say a big thank you to Gemma and Toby for this gift,  thank you to their generous friends, for remembering our children and for setting a great example for us all,” she adds.

This is the second year that the twins celebrated their birthday with a donation to the Home.

For over a decade the Mediterranean Shipping Company, one of the world’s leading global shipping lines, has called The Bahamas home and over time has tranformed the way that thousands of companies throughout the country do business.

The success of Mediterranean Shipping Company in Grand Bahama has also translated into success for the Freeport Container Port, which is one of Grand Bahama’s largest employers.

Due to the company’s success MSC Geneva opted to expand to Nassau in late 2007, allowing Nassau retailers to connect with over 270 ports worldwide, and able to ship to the five (5) continents under one Bill of Lading, saving the consumer much needed transshipment costs.

“We are committed to the island,” said Manuel Ruiz, General Manager of MSC Bahamas. “It is unfortunate that rumours in the marketplace have created a lot of talk about us leaving. This simply is not true and we want to assure our clients and most importantly our investors we are here to stay.”

Mrs. Patricia Leonard, Member of the original 1962 class at LCIS, exchanges gifts with the youngest member of the current LCIS student body, Christian Goulden (4). Principal, Stacy Bobo, looks on proudly.NASSAU, Bahamas -- Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) marked the beginning of its 50th anniversary celebrations with a Founders Day Assembly honoring their founder E.P.Taylor, on January 31, 2012.

“We have put a lot of work into the celebration of our 50th year,” said Stacey Bobo, Principal at LCIS. “It seemed fitting to start at the beginning with our founder E.P.Taylor. We wanted to learn as much about him as possible and we wanted to be sure that our students understood that Taylor really was a visionary and that we, as a school, are here because of him.”

E.P.Taylor, the original developer behind Lyford Cay, founded the Lyford Cay School in 1962 to provide a good education to the children of his staff. The school opened its doors with nine students and two teachers and today, 50 years later, has a student enrollment of 345 students with a faculty of more than 70.

The Founder’s Day service honored past alumni and brought the exciting story of E.P.Taylor’s life to everyone gathered.  "We learned as much as we could about E.P.Taylor, through contacts with his family members, friends and those who know him in the Lyford Cay Community. We read his biography by Richard Rohmer, interviewed people who knew him or worked for him and spoke to his family members,” said Mrs. Rebecca Massey, Development Coordinator who is responsible for the 50th Anniversary.

“It’s the best thing! We were overwhelmed when we were sent pictures of Hewitt wearing our shirts on tour“ said CEO James ‘Jimmy’ Sands. “It’s a huge honour to have such an acclaimed athlete sporting our paraphernalia and giving us such great international exposure for our products. Plus, he also promoted our country to millions of viewers, that’s just an extra bonus!”

According to the Australian Herald Sun, “Hewitt, Australia's great survivor, has donned the "Strong Back'' and "Sands'' brands on his chest ...
they are both beers.  And beers of choice for Hewitt, who lives in the paradise where the brews are concocted.”

Hewitt, who was interviewed during the Australian Open, sported the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage companies ‘man in the boat’ logo for on court interviews and the company’s Strong Back t-shirt for pressroom coverage. Hewitt suffered a terrible toe injury last year and is making a comeback. Hewitt will be representing Australia in the upcoming Davis Cup this month. He has a residence in The Bahamas and loves the islands and now we know his Sands Beer.
